Defending champions Argentina produced one of the most dramatic comebacks of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, overturning a two-goal deficit to beat Egypt 3-2 and book their place in the quarterfinals.
Egypt stunned Argentina with first-half dominance as Yasser Ibrahim opened the scoring before Mostafa Zico doubled the lead in the 67th minute, leaving the South Americans on the brink of elimination. Lionel Messi had earlier missed a penalty and struck the post, adding to Argentina’s frustration.
With just 11 minutes of normal time remaining, Argentina launched an extraordinary fightback. Cristian Romero pulled one back in the 79th minute, Messi equalized four minutes later, and Enzo Fernández completed the comeback with a stoppage-time winner, sending the holders through to the last eight.
The victory keeps Argentina’s hopes of retaining the World Cup alive. They will now face Switzerland in the quarterfinals after the Swiss advanced on penalties against Colombia.
