At least four people have died following a rainstorm that swept through parts of Sokoto State, destroying public infrastructure, including a school and a hospital, while leaving dozens of residents displaced.

The storm, accompanied by strong winds and heavy rainfall, caused widespread damage across affected communities. Authorities said the victims died after buildings collapsed during the incident.

In addition to the fatalities, the storm damaged a healthcare facility, disrupted activities at a school and destroyed several residential buildings, exposing many families to further hardship during the rainy season.

Emergency response officials and local authorities have begun assessing the extent of the destruction and identifying affected households. Relief efforts are expected to focus on providing temporary shelter, medical assistance and essential supplies to displaced residents.

The incident has also raised concerns about the vulnerability of public infrastructure and residential buildings to increasingly severe weather events. Experts have emphasized the need for improved building standards, drainage systems and disaster preparedness to reduce the impact of extreme weather on communities.

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency has repeatedly advised residents in flood prone and storm vulnerable areas to remain alert during the rainy season and to follow safety advisories issued by emergency management agencies.

Authorities are continuing to evaluate the full extent of the damage, while humanitarian assistance is being mobilized for affected communities. Officials said assessments will guide recovery efforts, including the rehabilitation of damaged public facilities and support for displaced families.

The rainstorm is the latest in a series of weather related disasters recorded across northern Nigeria during the current rainy season, underscoring the need for sustained investment in climate resilience, disaster risk reduction and community preparedness.
