The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has launched a special operation aimed at reducing road crashes on major highways across Nigeria’s North-West region.
The operation is part of efforts by the road safety agency to address rising concerns over road accidents, improve traffic management and strengthen enforcement of safety regulations in the region.
According to the FRSC, the initiative will focus on increased patrols, public awareness campaigns, enforcement of traffic laws and rapid response to emergencies along identified accident-prone routes.
The agency said personnel have been deployed to key locations to monitor driver behaviour, manage traffic flow and address violations that contribute to road crashes, including speeding, unsafe overtaking and other forms of reckless driving.
The North-West region, which includes Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Kebbi, Sokoto, Zamfara and Jigawa states, has recorded several road crashes linked to factors such as poor driving practices, vehicle conditions and road infrastructure challenges.
FRSC officials urged motorists to observe speed limits, avoid driving under the influence of alcohol or fatigue, and ensure vehicles are properly maintained before embarking on long journeys.
Road safety authorities have consistently identified human error as a major contributor to crashes in Nigeria, while also calling for improved road infrastructure, stronger enforcement and greater public compliance with safety measures.
The FRSC said it would continue monitoring the highways throughout the operation and work with relevant stakeholders, including state authorities and transport unions, to improve safety outcomes for road users.
The agency did not provide a timeline for the conclusion of the special operation or disclose specific targets for crash reduction.
