President Bola Tinubu has approved a salary increase of up to 80% for personnel of the Nigerian Armed Forces, a move aimed at improving troop welfare, boosting morale and strengthening the country’s response to ongoing security challenges.

Government officials said the pay adjustment is part of broader efforts to enhance the welfare of military personnel serving in various operational theatres, including counterinsurgency, counterterrorism and internal security missions.

According to the government, the salary review recognizes the sacrifices of members of the armed forces and is intended to improve their working conditions as they continue operations against insurgents, bandits, kidnappers and other criminal groups across the country.

The revised remuneration is expected to benefit officers and soldiers of the Army, Navy and Air Force, although authorities have yet to release a detailed implementation timetable or breakdown of the new salary structure.

Nigeria continues to face multiple security threats, including the insurgency in the North-East, armed banditry and mass kidnappings in the North-West and North-Central, oil theft and pipeline vandalism in the Niger Delta, and communal conflicts in several parts of the country. These challenges have placed sustained demands on the military and other security agencies.

Security analysts say improved salaries can enhance troop morale, increase job satisfaction and strengthen operational effectiveness. However, they caution that remuneration alone is unlikely to resolve the country’s security challenges without complementary investments in modern equipment, intelligence gathering, logistics, healthcare, housing and continuous training.

Development experts argue that a comprehensive security strategy should also address the underlying drivers of insecurity, including unemployment, poverty, weak governance and limited economic opportunities. They note that combining military operations with socio-economic development, community engagement and regional cooperation is essential for achieving lasting peace.

Economists say the pay increase reflects the government’s commitment to supporting the armed forces but emphasize the need for prudent fiscal management to ensure the additional expenditure remains sustainable while preserving funding for other critical sectors such as healthcare, education and infrastructure.

The salary review forms part of ongoing reforms within Nigeria’s security sector aimed at improving operational readiness and personnel welfare. Observers say the measure is expected to strengthen morale among service members while reinforcing the government’s commitment to enhancing national security amid evolving threats.
