Residents across Lagos State have called on the government to strengthen sanitation services and improve waste management, citing persistent refuse accumulation, blocked drainage channels and inadequate waste collection in several communities.
The residents said poor waste disposal practices and irregular evacuation of refuse had contributed to environmental pollution, unpleasant odours and the deterioration of public spaces, raising concerns about public health and environmental safety.
They urged the Lagos State Government and relevant environmental agencies to improve the frequency of waste collection, provide adequate disposal facilities and ensure that sanitation regulations are effectively enforced.
Some residents also expressed concern over indiscriminate dumping of refuse on roadsides, in drainage channels and around residential areas, warning that such practices could worsen flooding, particularly during the rainy season.
They called for more accessible waste collection points and stronger monitoring of private waste management operators to ensure that households and businesses receive reliable services.
Environmental concerns in Lagos have remained a major issue due to the state’s growing population, rapid urbanisation and increasing volume of household and commercial waste.
The residents also stressed the need for sustained public awareness campaigns to encourage proper waste disposal, recycling and community participation in environmental sanitation.
They urged the government to complement enforcement measures with improved infrastructure, including more waste collection vehicles, functional disposal facilities and adequate drainage systems.
They further called on residents, businesses and community organisations to take greater responsibility for keeping their surroundings clean, noting that effective sanitation requires cooperation between the government and the public.
The residents maintained that improved waste management would help reduce environmental pollution, protect public health and contribute to a cleaner and more liveable Lagos.
