INTERPOL Warns AI Now Powers More Than Half of Cybercrime in Africa

Artificial intelligence is now driving more than half of cybercrime activities across Africa, according to INTERPOL, as digital scams become increasingly sophisticated and difficult for individuals, businesses and governments to detect.

The international policing organization said cybercriminals are increasingly using AI-powered tools to automate phishing campaigns, create convincing fake identities, generate fraudulent emails and messages, and produce manipulated audio and video content to deceive victims.

According to INTERPOL, the growing use of artificial intelligence has enabled criminal networks to scale cyberattacks more rapidly, making online fraud more targeted, efficient and financially damaging.

The agency warned that financial institutions, government agencies, businesses and private individuals are all facing heightened risks as cybercriminals exploit AI to bypass traditional security measures and manipulate unsuspecting users.

Experts say the rise of generative AI has lowered the technical barriers to cybercrime, allowing criminals to produce realistic phishing websites, deepfake videos and voice impersonations that can be used to facilitate identity theft, business email compromise and financial fraud.

Cybersecurity analysts note that Africa’s accelerating digital transformation has expanded access to online banking, e-commerce and digital public services, but has also increased exposure to cyber threats. They emphasize that stronger digital security frameworks are needed to keep pace with evolving technologies.

INTERPOL called on governments, financial institutions and technology companies to strengthen cooperation in combating cyber-enabled crime. It also urged countries to invest in cybercrime investigations, digital forensics, law enforcement training and cross-border intelligence sharing.

The organization further encouraged businesses and individuals to adopt stronger cybersecurity practices, including multi-factor authentication, regular software updates, employee awareness training and verification procedures before approving financial transactions or sharing sensitive information.

Development experts warn that cybercrime poses significant risks to Africa’s digital economy by undermining consumer confidence, discouraging investment and increasing the financial costs of doing business. They argue that improving cybersecurity is essential to supporting digital innovation, financial inclusion and sustainable economic growth.

Analysts also stress the need for updated legal and regulatory frameworks capable of addressing AI-enabled cyber threats while promoting the responsible use of emerging technologies. They say collaboration among governments, law enforcement agencies, the private sector and international organizations will be critical to responding effectively to the evolving cybercrime landscape.

As digital adoption continues to expand across the continent, INTERPOL said strengthening cybersecurity resilience and public awareness will be essential to protecting citizens, businesses and critical infrastructure from increasingly sophisticated AI-driven cyber threats.
