Former Zamfara State Governor Abdul’aziz Yari says about 1.7 million residents have benefited from his humanitarian relief programme, which provides food assistance and other essential support to vulnerable households across the state.
Speaking during an outreach event, Yari said the initiative was launched to ease the impact of economic hardship on low-income families, particularly women, children, older persons and other vulnerable groups.
According to him, the programme has distributed food items and other relief materials to communities across Zamfara, with the objective of supporting household welfare and improving access to basic necessities during periods of economic difficulty.
Yari said the intervention complements broader efforts by governments and development partners to address poverty and improve living conditions in communities affected by economic challenges and insecurity. He called for greater collaboration among public institutions, private organizations and philanthropists to expand humanitarian support for vulnerable populations.
The former governor noted that sustained investment in agriculture, education, healthcare and job creation remains essential to reducing poverty and building long-term economic resilience. He said relief programmes should be accompanied by initiatives that promote self-reliance and sustainable livelihoods.
Development experts say humanitarian assistance plays an important role in helping vulnerable households cope with short-term shocks, particularly in regions affected by insecurity, inflation and rising food prices. They caution, however, that long-term improvements in living standards require investments in productive sectors, infrastructure and social protection systems.
Analysts also emphasize the importance of transparency, accountability and effective monitoring in the implementation of humanitarian programmes to ensure that assistance reaches intended beneficiaries and delivers measurable outcomes.
Zamfara has faced persistent security and socio-economic challenges in recent years, with many communities experiencing disruptions to farming activities and livelihoods.
