Nigeria has joined a global initiative aimed at aligning food systems with climate action, reinforcing the country’s commitment to building a more resilient, sustainable and climate-smart agricultural sector.
The initiative, known as the Convergence Initiative, brings together governments and development partners to integrate food security, climate adaptation and environmental sustainability into national policies. Nigeria’s participation is expected to strengthen efforts to address the growing impact of climate change on agriculture while improving livelihoods and nutrition.
The announcement was made during a two-day National Dialogue in Abuja, where policymakers, development partners and stakeholders discussed strategies for transforming Nigeria’s agrifood systems. The initiative seeks to ensure that climate policies and food system reforms are implemented in a coordinated manner, enabling countries to tackle food insecurity and climate risks simultaneously.
Officials said Nigeria’s participation complements ongoing efforts to implement the National Agrifood System Strategy and Action Plan under the Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme (CAADP) Kampala Declaration 2026–2035. The strategy aims to increase agricultural productivity, strengthen climate resilience, improve nutrition and attract greater investment into the sector.
Stakeholders noted that climate change continues to threaten food production through rising temperatures, erratic rainfall, flooding and prolonged droughts, making closer coordination between agricultural and climate policies increasingly important. They said the initiative will support evidence-based planning, encourage sustainable farming practices and help mobilise financing for climate-resilient agriculture.
The Federal Government expressed confidence that the partnership will accelerate Nigeria’s transition to a more sustainable agrifood system while contributing to national food security, environmental protection and the country’s commitments under global climate agreements.
