Moroccan security authorities say they have successfully foiled a series of planned terrorist attacks linked to a cell loyal to the Islamic State group operating in the Sahel region. The operation, carried out by Morocco’s Central Bureau of Judicial Investigations (BCIJ), led to the arrest of several suspects accused of coordinating with senior Islamic State operatives based in the Sahel and preparing attacks on strategic targets across the country.
According to Moroccan officials, the suspects had allegedly pledged allegiance to the Islamic State’s Sahel branch and were in the advanced stages of planning attacks using explosives and other weapons. Security forces said they seized bomb making materials, electronic equipment, communication devices, and extremist propaganda during coordinated raids conducted in multiple locations. Authorities believe the group intended to target security installations, public institutions, and other sensitive sites to undermine national stability.
Investigators said the cell maintained direct contact with Islamic State operatives active in the Sahel, a region that has experienced a sharp rise in extremist violence in recent years. The Sahel has become a major base for jihadist groups linked to both the Islamic State and Al Qaeda, with attacks spreading across countries including Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger. Moroccan authorities warned that these groups continue to seek opportunities to expand their networks beyond the region.
The operation underscores Morocco’s continued efforts to strengthen its counterterrorism strategy through intelligence gathering, regional cooperation, and proactive security operations. The country has earned international recognition for its intelligence capabilities and has frequently shared counterterrorism information with partners in Africa, Europe, and the Middle East to help prevent extremist attacks.
Officials said investigations are continuing to identify other individuals who may have been involved in the network and to determine whether the suspects received financial or logistical support from terrorist organizations operating outside Morocco. The latest arrests highlight the persistent security threat posed by extremist groups in the Sahel, despite sustained military operations and international efforts to curb their influence across the region.
