An average of 47 women and girls were killed each day during the Gaza war, according to a report by UN Women, underscoring the disproportionate toll the conflict has taken on civilians.
The agency said more than 38,000 women and girls were killed between October 2023 and December 2025, a figure significantly higher than in previous conflicts in Gaza. It added that women and girls accounted for a larger share of deaths than seen in earlier wars in the territory.
The findings highlight the severe humanitarian impact of the war in Gaza Strip, where large scale destruction of infrastructure has made access to basic services increasingly difficult. According to the report, around one million women and girls have been displaced, while more than 500,000 lack access to essential healthcare, including maternal services.
Despite a ceasefire that began in October, violence has continued, with hundreds of Palestinians reported killed in the months since, alongside casualties on the Israeli side. Both Israel and Palestinian armed groups, including Hamas, have accused each other of violating the truce.
The UNICEF also warned that children remain at high risk, reporting continued deaths and injuries even after the ceasefire took effect.
U.N. officials said the lack of detailed, gender disaggregated data since the truce makes it difficult to determine the full scale of ongoing casualties, but warned that conditions remain dire and that women and children continue to bear the brunt of the conflict.
The war, which began after a deadly October 2023 attack by Hamas on Israel, has left tens of thousands dead and triggered what aid agencies describe as a prolonged humanitarian crisis, with growing concern over the long term impact on civilians, particularly women and girls.
