A crude oil tanker, Sonangol Namibe, may have suffered a breach in its hull following an explosion while anchored near Iraq’s Khor al Zubair Port, according to a representative of Sonangol Marine Services.

The tanker, which sails under the flag of Bahamas, was reportedly approached by a small unidentified boat shortly after 01:20 local time on March 5. According to the company’s statement, the small vessel moved close to the port side of the tanker before a loud explosion was heard moments later.

Initial assessments suggest the blast likely breached the vessel’s hull, raising concerns about possible structural damage and leaks. Maritime officials said the tanker may also be taking on water, while reports indicate that one of its tanks could be leaking.

At the time of the incident, the ship was anchored near the southern Iraqi port and was reportedly not carrying cargo. Authorities and maritime security agencies are still working to determine the cause of the explosion and whether it was accidental or the result of a deliberate attack.

The incident comes amid heightened security concerns across the Gulf region, where attacks on commercial shipping have increased in recent days. Analysts warn that further disruptions could threaten key maritime trade routes used for global oil transportation.

Investigations are ongoing, and officials have yet to confirm the full extent of the damage to the vessel or identify those responsible for the blast.
