The Kenyan gospel community is mourning the heartbreaking loss of celebrated singer Betty Bayo, who passed away in November 2025 at the age of 42. The beloved artist, known for uplifting hits such as “Ngai Ti Mundu,” “Atasimama Nawe,” and “Nikuhadwho,” was an icon in the gospel music scene and a source of inspiration for many.

According to reports confirmed on November 10, 2025, Betty, whose real name was Beatrice Mbugua, died while receiving treatment for leukemia, a form of blood cancer. She had been admitted to the high dependency unit (HDU) at Kenyatta National Hospital, where she had been receiving care for about a week before her passing.

Her former partner and the father of her children, Pastor Victor Kanyari, confirmed the sad news, saying, “Betty has been in the hospital for one week. She died today at 5 a.m.”

Prominent figures in Kenya, including media personality Maina Kageni, shared their condolences. Kageni posted on social media, praising Betty as “a fine musician with a wonderful voice, immense talent, and an amazing personality,” adding that her passing is a huge loss for the Kenyan music fraternity.

Murang’a Woman Representative Betty Maina also addressed the media on behalf of the family, confirming that Betty’s death was due to complications from leukemia. Maina explained that the singer suffered from excessive bleeding in her final days, despite doctors’ best efforts to save her life. “Together with her spouse, the father of her children, and close friends, we want to inform the public that we have lost Betty Bayo. She was unwell, suffering from leukemia, and the doctors did their best—but by the will of God, she has rested,” she said.

Betty’s body has since been transferred to KU Referral Hospital, where funeral arrangements are underway.

Following her passing, tributes have poured in from fans, musicians, and religious leaders who celebrated her life and legacy. Bishop Ben Kiengei remembered her as a devoted servant of God, recalling her rise to fame with the hit song “Eleventh Hour.” In his heartfelt tribute, he wrote, “She lived a life of praising God and impacting others through her music. Betty leaves behind a legacy of faith, friendship, and purpose. She has rested, having served.”

Betty Bayo is survived by her husband, two children, family, and friends, all of whom remember her as a joyful, talented, and inspiring soul who touched many lives through her music and faith.
