The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Federal Republic of Nigeria has expressed deep sorrow over the untimely death of Mrs. Zainab Joy Momodu, who until her passing was the Acting Head of Mission (Chargé d’Affaires ad interim) at the Embassy of Nigeria in Guinea-Bissau. Mrs. Momodu died on Monday, 7th July 2025, at the Military Hospital in Bissau following a brief illness. Her passing marks the end of a distinguished diplomatic career and a life dedicated to service, leadership, and the advancement of Nigeria’s foreign policy objectives.

Mrs. Zainab Joy Momodu joined the Nigerian Foreign Service in 2010 as a member of the 20th Regular Course of the Foreign Service Academy. She quickly distinguished herself through her diligence, intelligence, and unwavering commitment to the principles of diplomacy and international cooperation. Over the years, she served the nation with honor and distinction, holding various positions that showcased her deep understanding of international relations and her ability to manage complex diplomatic assignments.

As a career diplomat, Mrs. Momodu brought clarity, purpose, and compassion to her work. She was well known within diplomatic circles for her professionalism, humility, and tireless dedication to Nigeria’s mission abroad. In Guinea-Bissau, she played a crucial role in fostering bilateral relations between both countries, promoting economic cooperation, and protecting the interests of Nigerian citizens living in the country. Her leadership was especially vital in navigating the complex political and socio-economic dynamics in Guinea-Bissau, where her presence at the mission brought a sense of stability, dignity, and national representation.

The Ministry described her death as not just a loss to the Foreign Service but a significant blow to the diplomatic community and to Nigeria as a whole. Mrs. Momodu represented the best ideals of public service – integrity, dedication, empathy, and patriotism. Her colleagues remember her as a calm but firm leader, a mentor to younger diplomats, and a woman of faith and principle who worked with a rare blend of diplomacy and humanity.

In a statement issued by the Ministry, it reads:

“Her untimely death has created a deep void within the Foreign Service. Mrs. Momodu was a shining light in our diplomatic corps – a woman of quiet strength and exceptional capability. She served Nigeria with a level of distinction and grace that left a lasting impression on every mission she undertook. We deeply mourn her loss.”

Beyond her professional commitments, Mrs. Momodu was also known for her warm and approachable personality. She maintained deep personal connections with those around her – from embassy staff to Nigerian nationals abroad – often going beyond her official duties to offer support, guidance, and compassion. She was particularly passionate about the welfare of Nigerians in the diaspora and took active steps to resolve consular issues, promote community engagement, and uphold the dignity of her compatriots living abroad.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has extended heartfelt condolences to her immediate family, friends, and colleagues, noting that her legacy will endure through the impact she made both at home and abroad. Her passing is being mourned across Nigeria’s diplomatic missions globally, with tributes pouring in from diplomats, government officials, international partners, and those whose lives she touched during her service.

Mrs. Momodu’s commitment to Nigeria’s foreign policy, her leadership in diplomatic missions, and her quiet but firm advocacy for justice, peace, and mutual respect among nations will be remembered as an example to aspiring diplomats and public servants.

At this moment of grief, the Ministry urges all members of the diplomatic and international community to keep the family of Mrs. Momodu in their thoughts and prayers. The Ministry also prays for the peaceful repose of her soul and for divine strength and comfort to be granted to all who mourn this profound loss.

Nigeria has indeed lost one of its finest diplomats. Mrs. Zainab Joy Momodu’s legacy of integrity, excellence, and service will not be forgotten.
