Muhammad Habib Husaini, a student of Computer and Communication Engineering at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU), Bauchi, has developed an innovative digital device that uses Artificial Intelligence to convert sign language into audible speech. The invention, named the NHED Smart Glove, is designed to empower individuals with speech impairments by giving them a voice and bridging the communication gap between them and the wider society.

The NHED Smart Glove functions by detecting sign language movements through pressure sensors embedded in the glove. These sensors relay signals to an ESP32 microcontroller, which processes the input and transmits it to an SD card module. The module then triggers the playback of corresponding audio files, effectively translating hand signs into speech in real time. The glove is designed for intuitive use and supports natural sign language flow, making it a practical tool for everyday communication.

In a statement shared via the university’s official Facebook page, ATBU praised Husaini’s ingenuity and resourcefulness, noting that all components of the glove were locally sourced and built from scratch, emphasizing its affordability and accessibility. The NHED Smart Glove stands out not only for its advanced technological design but also for its cost-effectiveness, offering a viable solution for people with speech disabilities, especially in resource-limited communities.

Husaini described the glove as more than a device — a symbol of empowerment. “With the NHED Smart Glove, we are not just building a device; we are also restoring dignity and bridging the gaps in communication,” he said. His innovation reflects the growing role of Nigerian youth in leveraging emerging technologies like AI and IoT to solve real-world problems, especially in the health and assistive technology sectors.

The NHED Smart Glove marks a significant milestone for Nigerian innovation in inclusive tech and signals ATBU’s commitment to nurturing talents that can drive meaningful change. As the global demand for accessible communication tools grows, this AI-powered glove represents a transformative step toward digital inclusion and a better quality of life for the speech-impaired community.
