The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has called on the authorities in Guinea-Bissau to release detained opposition figures, expressing concern over political tensions and urging respect for the rule of law.
The regional bloc made the appeal amid growing concerns about the country’s political climate and the detention of opposition members. ECOWAS emphasized the need for due process, dialogue and adherence to democratic principles to preserve stability in the country.
In its statement, ECOWAS urged the authorities to ensure that the rights of all political actors are protected and called for an environment that supports peaceful political participation and national reconciliation.
The bloc reiterated its commitment to promoting democracy, constitutional order and good governance across West Africa, noting that political disagreements should be resolved through lawful and inclusive processes.
The appeal comes as Guinea-Bissau continues to face periodic political uncertainty despite efforts to strengthen democratic institutions. Political analysts say sustained dialogue among political stakeholders will be essential to reducing tensions and maintaining public confidence in the country’s governance.
Human rights advocates have also stressed the importance of protecting civil liberties, ensuring judicial independence and guaranteeing fair legal procedures for all individuals in detention.
ECOWAS said it will continue engaging with the Guinea-Bissau authorities and other stakeholders to support peaceful resolution of political disputes and encourage conditions conducive to democratic governance.
The authorities in Guinea-Bissau had not publicly responded to the ECOWAS appeal at the time of publication.
