Morocco to Build $1.5 Billion Waste-to-Energy Plant in Casablanca

Morocco has announced plans to develop a $1.5 billion waste-to-energy plant in Casablanca, a major infrastructure project aimed at improving urban waste management, expanding renewable energy generation and supporting the country’s environmental sustainability goals.

The proposed facility will convert municipal solid waste into electricity, reducing the volume of waste sent to landfills while generating power for homes and businesses. Officials say the project forms part of Morocco’s broader strategy to diversify its energy mix and transition toward cleaner, more sustainable energy sources.

Government authorities said the plant is expected to strengthen waste management systems in Casablanca, Morocco’s largest city and commercial hub, where rapid urbanization has increased demand for efficient waste disposal solutions.

Energy and environmental experts note that waste-to-energy facilities can help address two major challenges simultaneously by reducing landfill dependence and producing electricity from non-recyclable waste. They add that such projects can also contribute to lowering greenhouse gas emissions when operated under strict environmental standards.

The investment is expected to create employment opportunities during both the construction and operational phases while stimulating local industries involved in engineering, environmental services and infrastructure development.

They also stress the importance of integrating waste-to-energy facilities into broader circular economy strategies that prioritize waste reduction, reuse and recycling.

The Casablanca project is expected to strengthen municipal waste management while contributing to energy security and sustainable urban development. Experts say investments in modern waste infrastructure can improve public health, reduce environmental pollution and enhance the resilience of rapidly growing cities.

As Morocco continues to expand its renewable energy portfolio, the planned waste-to-energy plant represents another step toward building a more sustainable and diversified energy sector while supporting economic growth and environmental protection.
