Eichie has identified corruption and weak public institutions as major obstacles to Nigeria’s development, calling for stronger governance reforms, greater accountability and institutional strengthening to accelerate the country’s socio-economic progress.

Speaking on the state of governance in Nigeria, Eichie said persistent corruption continues to undermine public trust, discourage investment and limit the effective delivery of public services. He argued that addressing these challenges is essential to achieving sustainable economic growth and improving citizens’ quality of life.

According to him, stronger institutions are critical to ensuring transparency, enforcing the rule of law and promoting efficient public administration. He said government agencies must be empowered to carry out their mandates independently while maintaining high standards of accountability.

Eichie also emphasized the need for consistent implementation of public policies, noting that well-designed reforms can only deliver meaningful results when supported by effective institutions and responsible leadership. He urged policymakers to prioritize institutional capacity-building and reforms that improve service delivery across all levels of government.

He further called for greater civic participation in governance, encouraging citizens, civil society organizations and the private sector to play active roles in promoting transparency and holding public institutions accountable.

Governance experts say corruption remains a significant challenge to economic development, increasing the cost of doing business, reducing public revenue and weakening investor confidence. They argue that stronger oversight institutions, transparent procurement systems and independent anti-corruption agencies are essential to improving governance outcomes.

Analysts also stress that institutional reforms should be accompanied by investments in digital governance, judicial efficiency and public sector capacity to enhance accountability and reduce opportunities for corruption. They note that technology-driven public services can improve transparency while increasing efficiency in government operations.

Nigeria has implemented various governance and anti-corruption initiatives over the years, but experts say sustained political commitment, institutional independence and public support remain crucial to achieving lasting reforms.

Eichie urged leaders across government, business and civil society to work collaboratively in building stronger institutions capable of driving inclusive development and restoring public confidence in governance.

He said tackling corruption and strengthening public institutions are fundamental to creating an enabling environment for investment, improving service delivery and positioning Nigeria for long-term economic growth and sustainable national development.
