Nigeria’s fashion industry is undergoing a rapid transformation, evolving from modest tailoring operations into a dynamic ecosystem that is gaining recognition on the global stage. Ibrahim Akosile, founder of Cossly Wears, says the sector’s growth is being driven by youthful creativity, technological access, and increasing international demand for African-inspired designs.

Akosile, who has spent more than 13 years building his brand, explained that Nigerian designers now have access to global fabrics, accessories, and digital tools, enabling them to produce garments that rival international fashion houses. “We are creating world-class pieces that compete on any stage. It’s an exciting time to be a designer in Nigeria,” he said.

His own journey reflects the industry’s broader evolution. What began as a university side hustle

— outsourcing tailoring orders to independent craftsmen has matured into a structured enterprise with a state-of-the-art factory, a fabric retail arm, and a specialised embroidery unit. Akosile noted that early challenges with quality control pushed him to consolidate production under one roof, ensuring consistency and craftsmanship.

Despite infrastructure hurdles such as unreliable electricity and poor logistics, Akosile believes Nigerian fashion is carving out a unique identity by blending traditional aesthetics with contemporary design. Cossly Wears, for instance, has expanded from bespoke kaftans to high-end suits, native wear, and ready-to-wear collections that combine Nigerian heritage with modern finishing.

“Our production process emphasises strict quality control, with garments undergoing multiple checks from cutting to final finishing before delivery,” he said. Looking ahead, the brand plans to strengthen its manufacturing capacity, expand its ready-to-wear line, and support other entrepreneurs through fabric supply and embroidery services.

Akosile is optimistic about the future: “The future is global and digital. We are building a system that allows our ‘Made in Nigeria’ products to reach customers anywhere in the world.” He believes that with improved infrastructure and sustained innovation, Nigerian fashion will continue to grow as a major force in the global creative economy.
