In Iseyin, a town in southwestern Nigeria, the rhythmic clatter of looms continues to echo through shaded courtyards and narrow alleys, where artisans hand-weave aso-oke, a traditional Yoruba fabric celebrated for its bold colors and cultural significance.

Once reserved for royalty and ceremonial occasions, aso-oke has evolved into a versatile textile embraced for weddings, festivals, everyday wear, and contemporary fashion. Its rising popularity is being fueled by Nigeria’s diaspora and the global influence of African music and design, with the fabric now appearing on international runways in London and Paris.

Despite growing demand, local artisans remain firm in their commitment to hand-weaving, insisting that mechanization would compromise the authenticity and craftsmanship that define aso-oke. This dedication not only preserves cultural heritage but also sustains jobs in weaving communities like Iseyin, where younger generations are finding new opportunities in the craft.

Designers highlight that aso-oke’s global expansion raises important questions about cultural ownership and the need to protect its origins. As the fabric bridges tradition and modernity, it symbolizes both Africa’s creative resilience and its growing influence in the global fashion industry.

For Nigeria’s weavers, the story of aso-oke is more than fashion it is a living heritage, woven by hand, and carried proudly onto the world stage.
