Sweden Announce Themselves at the World Cup With a Five-Star Demolition of Tunisia in Monterrey

Sweden did not just win their opening World Cup match in Monterrey. They sent a message. A five-goal demolition of Tunisia, featuring a debut World Cup goal from Alexander Isak, a record-breaking strike from substitute Mattias Svanberg, and two thunderbolts from the outstanding Yasin Ayari, announced Graham Potter’s side as a team that the rest of Group F will need to take very seriously indeed.

It took Sweden just seven minutes to open the scoring, and it came in the kind of fashion that set the tone for everything that followed. Yasin Ayari, the 22-year-old Brighton midfielder, collected the ball after a sloppy piece of defending from Tunisia and rifled a stunning effort into the top corner. It was a goal of real quality, struck with the kind of conviction that suggests a player who had been waiting a long time for a moment like this. For Ayari, the strike carried an additional emotional charge: it came against the country of his father’s birth. He refused to celebrate, standing still as his teammates rushed toward him, letting the significance of the moment speak for itself. In doing so, he became Sweden’s youngest World Cup scorer since Tomas Brolin in 1990, and his first senior international goal could not have arrived on a bigger stage.

The second goal, just before the half-hour mark, was the one the crowd had come to see. Alexander Isak, making his first World Cup appearance after a stop-start period at Liverpool following his £125 million move to Anfield in September, showed exactly why that fee was paid. Linking up with strike partner Viktor Gyokeres, whose hold-up play on the halfway line was as important as the finish itself, Isak received the ball in stride, drove powerfully from the left, and thumped a trademark effort into the bottom corner. It was authoritative, clean, and exactly the kind of goal you pay £125 million for. For a player who has battled injuries since arriving at Anfield, it was a statement of intent on the grandest possible stage.

Tunisia gave themselves hope two minutes before half-time when defender Omar Rekik headed home from a Hannibal Mejbri free-kick to make it 2-1. For a brief moment, the match had a different complexion. Sweden had been dominant but Tunisia, with a goal back and the half-time whistle approaching, had reason to believe the second period could bring them back into it. It did not.

On the hour mark, Isak turned from scorer to provider, setting up Gyokeres to restore the two-goal cushion and effectively settle the contest. But the most extraordinary moment of the evening was still to come. Substitute Mattias Svanberg came off the bench and, just 12 seconds later, put the ball in the net. Twelve seconds. It is the fastest goal ever scored by a substitute in World Cup history, a record that had stood since 1998 and was now, on a Tuesday night in Monterrey, comprehensively shattered. Football produces records in the strangest moments, and Svanberg will spend the rest of his life as the answer to a remarkable trivia question.

Ayari had the final word, smashing home his second long-range effort of the evening to complete a personal masterclass and round off a five-star team performance. Two goals, a record-breaking substitute appearance, and an Isak masterclass: Sweden had everything they needed and produced all of it in one extraordinary 90 minutes.

The result sends Potter’s side straight to the top of Group F with three points and a goal difference that will make every other team in the group pause and recalculate. Sweden came into this tournament as a side with genuine talent across the pitch but questions about whether they could translate club form onto the World Cup stage. On this evidence, those questions have been answered with considerable force. Monterrey was just the beginning.
