Kenya’s Main Airport Sees Flight Delays Due to Labour Dispute

Operations at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, Kenya’s primary aviation hub, were significantly disrupted following a labour dispute that triggered flight delays and operational slowdowns.

Airport authorities confirmed that sections of aviation workers engaged in industrial action, affecting critical services including ground handling, baggage processing, aircraft turnaround, and passenger facilitation. As a result, several domestic, regional, and international flights departing from and arriving in Nairobi experienced delays, with some airlines forced to adjust schedules to manage the backlog.

Passengers reported extended waiting times at check in counters and boarding gates, while inbound flights faced holding patterns and staggered arrivals due to limited ground support capacity. Airlines operating out of the airport issued travel advisories urging customers to monitor flight updates closely and arrive earlier than usual to allow for potential disruptions.

The labour dispute is understood to centre on concerns related to employment terms, working conditions, and ongoing sector reforms within Kenya’s aviation industry. Union representatives have called for constructive engagement with airport management and relevant government agencies to address their grievances and ensure job security and improved welfare for workers.

Government officials have indicated that efforts are underway to facilitate dialogue between the parties involved in order to restore full operations and prevent prolonged disruptions. The Ministry of Transport has emphasised the strategic importance of Jomo Kenyatta International Airport as a regional hub connecting East Africa to global destinations, noting that stability in airport operations is critical for trade, tourism, and investor confidence.

Aviation analysts say that while labour disputes are not uncommon in the sector, extended disruptions at a major hub such as JKIA can have ripple effects across airline networks, cargo logistics, and regional connectivity. They add that swift resolution will be essential to minimise economic impact and maintain Kenya’s reputation as a key gateway to Africa.

Airport authorities have assured the public that contingency measures are being implemented to ease congestion and normalise operations as discussions continue. Passengers are advised to stay in contact with their respective airlines for the latest travel information.
