Iranian negotiators were escorted home from high level peace talks in Pakistan under tight military protection after raising fears of a possible attack by Israel, according to a report, highlighting the heightened risks surrounding ongoing diplomatic efforts in the region.

The delegation from Iran had been in Islamabad for sensitive discussions with the United States, part of a broader push to de escalate tensions following months of confrontation. Sources familiar with the situation said Iranian officials grew increasingly concerned about their safety during and after the talks, prompting urgent coordination with Pakistani authorities.

In response, Pakistan provided an extensive security operation that included fighter jet escorts and airborne surveillance as the Iranian delegation departed. Officials said the protective measures were designed to deter any potential strike and to ensure the safe transit of negotiators through and beyond Pakistani airspace. The move reflects the seriousness with which Islamabad viewed the perceived threat, even though no specific attack was publicly confirmed.

The talks themselves, described by analysts as among the most consequential engagements between Washington and Tehran in recent years, ended without a concrete agreement. Key areas of disagreement included Iran’s nuclear programme, the scope and timing of sanctions relief, and broader regional security arrangements involving allied groups and military presence across the Middle East.

Tensions between Iran and Israel have remained high, with both sides engaged in a shadow conflict that has increasingly spilled into direct confrontation. Recent months have seen exchanges of strikes and counter strikes, raising fears that miscalculation could trigger a wider war involving multiple regional actors.

Diplomats say the security concerns expressed by Iranian negotiators underscore the fragile environment in which such talks are taking place. The need for a military escort is highly unusual in diplomatic contexts and signals a deep level of mistrust, as well as the perceived immediacy of the threat.

Despite the lack of a breakthrough, officials indicated that diplomatic channels remain open. Pakistan, which hosted the talks, is expected to continue playing a mediating role, alongside other international stakeholders seeking to prevent further escalation. However, the episode is likely to complicate future negotiations, as security assurances become an even more critical component of any diplomatic engagement.

Analysts note that the incident illustrates the broader challenges facing peace efforts in the region, where overlapping conflicts, competing strategic interests, and longstanding rivalries continue to undermine progress. While dialogue between Iran and the United States is seen as essential to reducing tensions, the latest developments highlight how quickly such efforts can be overshadowed by security concerns and geopolitical risks.

For now, the safe return of the Iranian delegation may ease immediate concerns, but the circumstances surrounding their departure serve as a stark reminder of the volatility that continues to define the region.
