Celebrations turned to horror in Algiers on Sunday night as three people tragically lost their lives and more than 70 others were injured following a stadium collapse at the 5 July Stadium during MC Alger’s league title win. The incident occurred shortly after the final whistle, when fans surged toward the front of the upper stand in celebration, causing a safety barrier to collapse and sending spectators plummeting onto the lower tiers.
The packed stadium was filled with tens of thousands of jubilant MC Alger supporters, who had gathered to witness their team secure back-to-back Algerian Ligue 1 titles after a goalless draw with NC Magra. The match had unfolded in a celebratory atmosphere, with green flares and chants engulfing the stadium in a sea of smoke and joy. However, the post-match celebrations quickly descended into chaos when the barrier failed, leading to a mass fall that left dozens injured and at least three people dead, according to Algeria’s Ministry of Health.
Emergency medical personnel responded swiftly, and over 70 injured fans were rushed to three different hospitals in the city. The health ministry later confirmed that most of those treated have since been discharged. In a show of solidarity and compassion, players and coaching staff from MC Alger visited the hospitals to donate blood and check on the injured.
The tragic accident prompted officials to postpone the official presentation of the league trophy, out of respect for the victims and their families. President Abdelmadjid Tebboune expressed his deep condolences to the bereaved families and extended wishes for a speedy recovery to those injured. The government has also announced that an investigation will be launched to determine the cause of the collapse and assess the safety standards at the stadium.
The 5 July Stadium, one of Algeria’s largest and most iconic sporting venues, has faced criticism in the past over maintenance and crowd control issues. The latest tragedy has reignited urgent calls for improved safety infrastructure, crowd management protocols, and more stringent inspections at sports venues across the country.
MC Alger, one of Algeria’s most successful football clubs, had entered the match needing only a point to retain their title. The 0-0 draw against NC Magra was enough to secure their second consecutive league crown, but any joy over the achievement was overshadowed by the loss of life and injuries suffered by loyal fans.
Football fans across Algeria have taken to social media to mourn the victims, calling for greater accountability and honoring the lives lost in what should have been a night of triumph. As investigations continue and the nation grieves, this tragic event serves as a stark reminder of the need for enhanced stadium safety measures and better planning during large-scale sporting events.Tools
