His Majesty, King Monday Arthur Whiskey, Udurhie I, the Ovie of Idjerhe Kingdom, has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to confer a national honour on High Chief Government Ekpemupolo, popularly known as Tompolo. The monarch highlighted Tompolo’s substantial contributions to Nigeria’s oil production and environmental restoration, emphasizing the pivotal role the former militant leader has played in fostering national development and stability in the Niger Delta region.

A Call for Recognition

Speaking during a recent engagement with community leaders and stakeholders, King Whiskey praised Tompolo for his dedication to ensuring the security of Nigeria’s oil infrastructure, a critical lifeline for the nation’s economy. The monarch noted that Tompolo’s efforts, particularly in safeguarding pipelines and curbing oil theft, have significantly bolstered Nigeria’s oil production capacity.

“Tompolo’s contributions to our national economy through his work in securing oil pipelines and ensuring steady production are monumental. His actions have restored confidence in the sector and brought hope to communities in the Niger Delta,” King Whiskey stated.

The traditional ruler further emphasized the importance of recognizing individuals who have dedicated their lives to advancing the nation’s interests, particularly in challenging and often volatile environments.

Contributions to Oil Production and Economic Stability

High Chief Ekpemupolo, who once led the Niger Delta’s militant movement advocating for the rights of the region’s people, has since transitioned into a role that promotes peace and development. Through his security firm, he has partnered with the Nigerian government to combat oil theft, a perennial challenge that has drained billions of dollars from the country’s economy.

Tompolo’s efforts have reportedly resulted in a marked reduction in pipeline vandalism and crude oil theft, helping Nigeria regain its footing in global oil markets. His work has also contributed to increased revenue generation at a time when the country is grappling with fiscal pressures.

Environmental Restoration and Advocacy

Beyond oil security, Tompolo has been an advocate for environmental restoration in the Niger Delta, a region devastated by decades of oil exploration and neglect. His initiatives have included cleanup campaigns and community sensitization programs aimed at addressing the ecological damage inflicted on the area’s waterways, farmlands, and forests.

“Tompolo has shown that he is not only a protector of our resources but also a steward of our environment,” King Whiskey remarked. “His commitment to restoring the degraded ecosystems of the Niger Delta is a testament to his love for the region and the country at large.”

Building Peace in the Niger Delta

Tompolo’s role as a peacebuilder has also been instrumental in stabilizing the Niger Delta, a region once marked by violent conflicts and agitation. By fostering dialogue and collaboration among stakeholders, he has helped create an environment conducive to development and investment.

The Ovie of Idjerhe Kingdom emphasized that these achievements make Tompolo a worthy candidate for a national honour, stating, “Honouring him is not just about recognizing his past contributions but encouraging others to emulate his model of transformation and service to the nation.”

The National Honour Appeal

King Whiskey’s call comes amid broader discussions about recognizing individuals who have made exceptional contributions to Nigeria’s development. National honours serve as a means of celebrating those who have gone above and beyond in their fields, inspiring others to work for the collective good.

He urged President Tinubu to consider Tompolo’s achievements as both a security partner and an environmental advocate. “This is a man who has turned his life around and dedicated it to the betterment of his people and the country. Such commitment should not go unnoticed,” the monarch concluded.
