Nigerian football icon Jay-Jay Okocha has lavished praise on Ademola Lookman following the striker’s crowning as African Player of the Year at the CAF Awards. The prestigious event, held in Marrakesh, Morocco, celebrated Lookman’s outstanding performances for both Atalanta and the Nigerian national team over the past year.

The 27-year-old Super Eagles forward clinched the top honor after an exceptional season that showcased his talent on some of football’s biggest stages. Lookman’s contributions to Atalanta’s success were highlighted by a memorable hat-trick in the UEFA Europa League final against Bayer Leverkusen, securing the Italian side’s historic triumph. On the international stage, Lookman was equally prolific, netting six goals for Nigeria in 2024, cementing his place as a key player for the Super Eagles.

Born in London but representing Nigeria with pride, Lookman’s achievements have resonated deeply across the continent. His blend of skill, work ethic, and professionalism set him apart, earning accolades from fans and football legends alike.

Former Super Eagles captain and football legend Jay-Jay Okocha was effusive in his praise for Lookman, emphasizing the broader qualities that contribute to such a prestigious recognition. Speaking on Soccer TV’s YouTube channel, Okocha noted, “The CAF Award is not just about how well you play on the pitch. Your attitude, your reactions to fellow players, and your responses to coaches are all tested before we even talk about tactical performances.”

Okocha highlighted the comprehensive nature of the evaluation process for the award, underscoring Lookman’s exemplary conduct and dedication. “For Ademola Lookman to be awarded African Best Player of the Year, it simply means he has been examined on all these criteria and passed,” he said.

The former Bolton Wanderers star went further, celebrating Lookman’s hard work and commitment. “Being dedicated to whatever you do and knowing the secret of your business is what makes you unique,” Okocha added. “Lookman is a unique African best Player of the Year, not just [an] African best. Go and verify what I’m saying – many are still testifying about him, and more will do so. His award is a reward for dedication and hard labour.”
