Victor Osimhen is the only option left for Galatasaray – Sinan Engin

Galatasaray’s attacking dynamics face a new test as Belgian forward Michy Batshuayi and Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen struggle to find synergy on the pitch. The duo’s inability to “get along,” as reported by Turkish football analyst Sinan Engin, raises questions about the club’s striking options in light of Mauro Icardi’s injury.

Tactical Challenges

Since the arrival of Victor Osimhen, Galatasaray head coach Okan Buruk has leaned on a two-striker system, which previously thrived with the Nigerian star partnered alongside Mauro Icardi. The pairing delivered impressive results, showcasing mutual understanding and creative interplay. However, with Icardi sidelined due to injury, Buruk opted to field Batshuayi alongside Osimhen in a UEFA Europa League clash against AZ Alkmaar.

The match ended in a 1-1 draw, with Osimhen scoring Galatasaray’s only goal, highlighting his individual brilliance. However, the pairing with Batshuayi appeared less cohesive, sparking further debate about their compatibility.

Analyst’s Perspective

Speaking on Turkish sports program Haber Sari Kirmizi, Sinan Engin, a former Beşiktaş player turned analyst, shared his thoughts on Galatasaray’s current striker situation.

“Victor Osimhen is the only option left for Galatasaray after Mauro Icardi,” Engin noted. “But he can’t get along with Michy Batshuayi. Icardi was the ideal partner for Osimhen. He understands how to play in a duo and creates opportunities for his partner.”

Engin also highlighted tactical adjustments that could compensate for the disconnect between Osimhen and Batshuayi. “To maximize Osimhen’s potential, you either place Dries Mertens next to him or bolster the midfield to provide better service. Unfortunately, Okan Buruk’s bench is not very deep. With injuries, the squad has dwindled to about 15 or 16 players.”

Personality Clashes

Off-field dynamics may also play a role in the partnership’s challenges. Batshuayi recently stirred controversy by claiming that he is “technically better” than Osimhen, an assertion that has fueled speculation about underlying tensions between the two players. While competition within a squad is healthy, such statements risk undermining team cohesion, particularly when both players are tasked with delivering results in high-pressure situations.

Osimhen’s Importance

Victor Osimhen, one of Africa’s most celebrated strikers, has continued to shine on the European stage. Known for his pace, physicality, and clinical finishing, the Super Eagles star has quickly become a cornerstone of Galatasaray’s attacking strategy. His ability to perform under pressure, as demonstrated by his goal against AZ Alkmaar, underscores his indispensability to the team.

However, Osimhen thrives in systems where his strike partner complements his playing style, as seen in his previous partnerships. Without Icardi’s playmaking abilities, Galatasaray’s attack risks becoming overly reliant on Osimhen’s individual brilliance.
