A South African court has postponed the extradition hearing of pan-African activist Kemi Seba until August 11, meaning he will remain in custody while legal proceedings continue.
Benin is seeking Seba’s extradition over allegations of incitement to rebellion following the country’s failed coup attempt in December 2025. South African authorities are reviewing whether the extradition request meets the legal requirements before deciding if he should be returned to Benin.
The hearing, which had been expected to move forward this week, was delayed by the court, extending uncertainty over the high-profile case. Seba will remain in pretrial detention until the next hearing.
Seba, a prominent pan-African activist known for his outspoken criticism of French influence in Africa, has denied the accusations through his legal team. His lawyers argue that the charges are politically motivated and are opposing the extradition request.
The August 11 hearing is expected to determine the next stage of the extradition process, though a final decision on whether Seba will be handed over to Benin may require further legal proceedings.
