Deadly Building Collapse in Fes Raises New Concerns Over Morocco’s Living Conditions

At least 19 people lost their lives and 16 others were injured when two residential buildings collapsed early Wednesday in Fes, according to the national news agency. Rescue teams worked through the morning to pull survivors from the rubble, as families gathered in distress awaiting updates on missing loved ones.

This tragedy comes at a time of growing public frustration over declining living standards across Morocco. In September, demonstrations erupted in several regions as citizens protested worsening poverty, infrastructure neglect and strained public services. The collapse in Fes has now intensified public scrutiny of housing conditions in older districts where structural weaknesses are common and oversight is often inconsistent.

Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the collapse, and early assessments point to deterioration in the aging structures. Local officials have pledged immediate support for the injured and the families of those who died, while residents are calling for a broader review of unsafe buildings to prevent further loss of life.

As Morocco continues to grapple with economic pressures and rising social discontent, the Fes disaster has become a stark reminder of the urgent need for stronger housing policies, infrastructure renewal and more responsive public services. The nation waits to see whether this tragedy will spur meaningful action or become yet another sign of longstanding issues left unaddressed.
