The 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), hosted in Morocco, has reached a thrilling stage with eight teams officially booking their spots in the quarterfinals after an intense and action-packed group phase. The tournament, which continues to showcase the rapid rise of women’s football on the continent, has seen standout performances, dramatic showdowns, and the emergence of new contenders for the coveted title.

South Africa, the defending champions, underlined their strength and ambition with a commanding 4-0 victory over Mali. The win not only ensured they topped Group C but also sent a clear message to the rest of the competition as they storm into the knockout round in spectacular fashion.

Ghana also rose to the occasion in a must-win clash against Tanzania. In a do-or-die scenario, the Black Queens delivered a stunning performance, scoring four goals to confirm their progression and keep their title hopes alive.

Meanwhile, in a closely contested match at Stade Larbi Zaouli in Casablanca, Algeria held African giants Nigeria to a goalless draw. The result was enough to see Algeria advance from Group B in second place, right behind the Super Falcons, who remain firm favorites with their rich tournament pedigree.

Host nation Morocco has equally impressed, drawing significant home support and maintaining solid form throughout the group stage. Zambia, Senegal, and Nigeria have also demonstrated consistency and strength, rounding out the list of quarterfinalists along with Algeria, South Africa, Ghana, and Mali.

The quarterfinal matchups promise high drama and fierce competition as these top eight teams battle for continental glory and qualification for the 2025 FIFA Women’s World Cup. With football fans across Africa and beyond watching closely, the WAFCON 2024 continues to highlight the incredible talent and potential of African women’s football on the global stage.
