Benin is preparing to face off against Nigeria in a crucial Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualification match on Thursday, as both nations vie for a spot in the 2025 tournament set to be hosted by Morocco. The game will kick off at 9:00 pm Central Africa Time (CAT) at Benin’s temporary home ground, Stade Félix Houphouët-Boigny in Abidjan, Ivory Coast, due to stadium upgrades in Cotonou.

Currently second in Group D, Benin has shown resilience and improvement in recent matches, clinching back-to-back victories over Libya and Rwanda before a narrow 2-1 loss to Rwanda in Kigali on October 15. Under head coach Gernot Rohr, the Cheetahs are optimistic about their chances and know that a win against the Super Eagles would bring them within one point of the group leaders, bolstering their hopes for AFCON qualification. Benin’s recent performances demonstrate a team willing to fight, though their challenge remains substantial as they prepare to confront the group favorites and historical rivals, Nigeria.

On the other hand, Nigeria comes into the fixture at the top of Group D, remaining undefeated in their campaign. They secured a 3-0 walkover victory against Libya in October after logistical issues at a Libyan airport stranded the Super Eagles’ team for over 12 hours, prompting them to return home without taking the field. Nigeria, led by star players and a tactically strong lineup, needs only a single point to secure their spot in the 2025 AFCON finals. This advantageous position reflects their dominance in the group, and they are determined to maintain their unbeaten run.

Historically, the Super Eagles have held the upper hand over the Cheetahs in head-to-head encounters. In 18 previous meetings, Nigeria has won 14 times, with Benin managing just two victories, while two matches ended in a draw. The most recent encounter saw Nigeria claim a decisive 3-0 victory over Benin in Uyo on September 7, asserting their dominance in Group D. However, Benin’s improved form and determination to secure an AFCON berth add an edge to the upcoming clash, making it a pivotal moment for both teams.

The Cheetahs are banking on a strong defensive strategy coupled with counter-attacks to challenge Nigeria’s powerful offense. Gernot Rohr has emphasized a disciplined approach, aiming to contain Nigeria’s playmakers and exploit scoring opportunities. Meanwhile, Nigeria’s team is expected to showcase their usual intensity, relying on key players to secure an early lead and dictate the game’s pace. The Super Eagles’ coach remains confident but cautious, recognizing Benin’s recent successes and commitment to qualifying.
