The Nigerian Institute of Management (Chartered) has elected Dr. Umar Musa Mustapha as its 26th President and Chairman of Council, marking a leadership transition expected to strengthen professional management practice, ethical leadership and institutional governance in Nigeria.

Mustapha, who previously served as the institute’s Deputy President, succeeds retired Commodore Abimbola Ayuba, whose tenure has ended. The institute announced the election through its Registrar and Chief Executive, Dr. Taiwo Ganiyat Olusesi, in a statement issued on Tuesday.

The institute also elected Professor Emmanuel Umana, Vice-Chancellor of Obong University, as Deputy President, while management consultant Lady Christie Adejoh emerged as National Treasurer. The principal officers are expected to steer the institute’s affairs for the next year.

Mustapha is the Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Mentholatum Nigeria Limited. He previously served as Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council of the University of Ibadan, where he was involved in institutional governance, policy reforms and financial restructuring.

His other public and professional roles include chairing the Kano State Committee on Public-Private Partnerships, serving on the council of Al-Qalam University in Katsina and leading the manufacturing sector committee of the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria.

He also previously served as Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Raleigh Nigeria Plc, where he led operational reforms and business expansion initiatives. His international experience includes consultancy and research assignments involving the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank and multinational corporations.

According to the institute, Mustapha has more than 40 years of professional experience, including over three decades in executive and board-level positions across the public and private sectors. He holds four doctoral qualifications and six master’s degrees from universities in Nigeria and abroad.

He is also a fellow of several professional bodies, including the Nigerian Institute of Management (Chartered), the Nigerian Society of Engineers, the Institute of Directors and the Nigerian Institution of Mechanical Engineers.

Olusesi expressed confidence that the newly elected officers would build on the institute’s achievements and strengthen its relevance as a professional management body. She also commended Ayuba and the outgoing leadership for their contributions to the institute’s development.

The transition comes as organisations across Nigeria face demands for stronger corporate governance, accountability, leadership development and improved institutional performance.

The NIM, established in 1961, is a professional body focused on management development and the promotion of effective management practices. Mustapha’s leadership will provide an opportunity for the institute to consolidate its professional development programmes and engagement with public and private sector institutions.

The institute said the date for the formal investiture of the new president and chairman of council would be announced later.
