A new chapter has been written in athletics history.

British middle-distance star Josh Kerr produced a sensational performance at the London Diamond League, breaking the men’s world mile record with an astonishing time of 3:42.68.

The record had stood for 27 years, with Moroccan legend Hicham El Guerrouj holding the previous mark of 3:43.13, set in 1999.

Competing in front of more than 60,000 fans at London Stadium, Kerr not only rewrote the record books but also achieved the goal of his ambitious “Project 222” a challenge he set earlier this year to complete the mile in 222 seconds.

His dedication extended beyond race day, with training routines that reportedly included 222-second recovery ice baths as part of his preparation.

The 28-year-old shaved nearly three seconds off his previous personal best and became just the sixth British athlete to hold the men’s mile world record.

To cap off a historic night, Kerr received a $50,000 prize for his record-breaking run, marking one of the greatest achievements of his career.

Interestingly, when El Guerrouj set the previous world record in 1999, Kerr was just one year old. Twenty-seven years later, he has become the new king of the mile.
