Morocco has once again defied the odds by making a managerial change shortly before a major tournament and reaping the rewards, becoming the only African team to benefit from a last minute coaching switch at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Head coach Walid Regragui, who was appointed just months before the 2022 World Cup and led Morocco to a historic semi final finish, has continued to build on that success. The Atlas Lions have now reached the quarter finals of the 2026 tournament after defeating Canada 3 nil in the Round of 16, reinforcing the country’s reputation as Africa’s most consistent team on football’s biggest stage.
In contrast, several other African nations that opted for late coaching changes ahead of the World Cup struggled to achieve similar success. Frequent managerial turnover has often disrupted team preparations, leaving squads with little time to adapt to new tactics and playing styles.
Morocco’s success has been attributed to stability within the squad, a clear footballing philosophy, and the continuity established under Regragui. Despite his relatively late appointment before the 2022 World Cup, he has maintained the confidence of players and supporters while developing one of Africa’s strongest national teams.
The Atlas Lions will now face France in the quarter finals, with hopes of extending another remarkable World Cup campaign and becoming the first African nation to reach a men’s World Cup final.
