Kremlin says strikes near Bushehr nuclear plant in Iran are dangerous

Russia has warned that recent strikes near Iran’s Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant are highly dangerous, raising concerns about the risk of a potential nuclear incident amid escalating conflict in the Middle East.

According to statements from the Kremlin and Russia’s state nuclear agency, projectiles have landed close to the facility, with one reported to have struck just a few hundred meters from an active reactor. While the plant itself has not been damaged and radiation levels remain normal, officials stressed that any attack in such proximity poses serious risks.

Russian authorities warned that further strikes could trigger a catastrophic scenario, given the presence of nuclear material at the site. The head of Russia’s nuclear agency called for the creation of a safety zone around the plant, urging all parties involved in the conflict to avoid targeting or operating near nuclear infrastructure.

The International Atomic Energy Agency has also cautioned that attacks near nuclear facilities represent a dangerous escalation. Although recent impacts caused only limited structural damage to nearby buildings, experts say a direct hit on critical components could lead to a radiological emergency with regional consequences.

The incident comes as tensions intensify between Iran, the United States, and Israel, with both military operations and retaliatory threats increasing across the region. Russia has joined international calls for restraint, emphasizing that safeguarding nuclear sites must remain a priority to prevent a disaster that could extend far beyond Iran’s borders.
