Technology experts have called on governments to establish clear regulatory frameworks to guide the development and use of artificial intelligence (AI), saying effective policies are essential to maximizing the technology’s benefits while addressing its risks.
The experts made the call during a stakeholders’ forum on emerging technologies, where they stressed that AI is transforming sectors such as healthcare, education, agriculture, finance and public administration. They noted that without appropriate governance, rapid AI adoption could create challenges related to privacy, cybersecurity, misinformation, bias and job displacement.
According to the participants, comprehensive AI frameworks should promote innovation while ensuring transparency, accountability and ethical standards. They said governments must work closely with academia, industry leaders and civil society to develop policies that encourage responsible research, protect citizens’ rights and build public trust in AI systems.
The experts also emphasized the importance of investing in digital infrastructure, AI education and workforce development to prepare citizens for an increasingly technology-driven economy. They argued that strengthening local capacity in AI research and innovation will enable countries to compete globally while addressing local development challenges.
They further urged policymakers to align national AI strategies with international best practices and emerging global standards, noting that cross-border collaboration will be crucial in addressing issues such as data governance, cybersecurity and the ethical use of artificial intelligence.
The stakeholders concluded that timely government action will help create an enabling environment for innovation, attract investment and ensure that AI contributes to sustainable economic growth and inclusive development while minimizing potential risks.
