Thailand is set to form a new coalition government after the Pheu Thai Party agreed to join forces with the election winning Bhumjaithai Party, Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul announced on Friday following days of post election negotiations. The move comes after Sunday’s general election delivered a fragmented parliamentary outcome, requiring political parties to seek alliances in order to secure a governing majority and bring stability to the country’s political landscape.

According to Anutin, the inclusion of Pheu Thai, which finished third in the vote, will help strengthen the coalition’s parliamentary numbers and provide a broader political base capable of advancing legislative priorities and economic reforms. He said discussions between party leaders had focused on policy alignment, national reconciliation and ensuring continuity in governance at a time when Thailand faces both domestic economic pressures and shifting regional dynamics. Coalition talks also centred on economic recovery strategies, infrastructure investment, tourism revival and measures aimed at supporting businesses and households dealing with rising living costs.

Political analysts note that the alliance between Bhumjaithai and Pheu Thai represents a significant development in Thailand’s complex political environment, where coalition building is often essential due to the multiparty structure of parliament. The partnership signals a pragmatic approach by both sides, prioritising government formation and policy influence over traditional political rivalries. Observers say the coalition could reshape Thailand’s legislative agenda, particularly in areas such as healthcare policy, agricultural development and regional economic cooperation.

Anutin emphasised that the new coalition aims to promote political stability, accelerate economic growth and maintain investor confidence while ensuring inclusive governance. Negotiations are expected to continue with smaller parties in the coming days as leaders work to finalise cabinet positions and secure a strong majority in parliament. The formation of the coalition marks a critical step toward establishing a new administration following the election, as Thailand seeks to navigate a challenging economic environment and maintain its position as a key economic hub in Southeast Asia.
