The Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has reiterated the country’s dedication to deepening ties with the People’s Republic of China following a courtesy visit from the Chargé d’Affaires of the Chinese Embassy, Mr. Zhou Hongyou, to the Ministry’s Spokesperson, Mr. Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, on Tuesday, 3 February 2026.

During the meeting, both sides highlighted the strong and long-standing Nigeria–China relationship, emphasizing extensive collaboration in trade, infrastructure development, and strategic partnerships. Nigeria was recognized as one of China’s most significant partners in Africa, with numerous Chinese-supported projects evident across multiple sectors of the Nigerian economy.

The discussions further underscored the value of reciprocal visits, study tours, and specialized training programs for diplomats to enhance mutual understanding. Notably, Chinese academic institutions, including Peking University, were cited for coordinating initiatives aimed at knowledge sharing and capacity building in governance, administration, strategic communication, and public diplomacy.

Additionally, the Chinese delegation shared plans to celebrate the Chinese New Year alongside the anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries. Both parties agreed to coordinate media messaging and public engagements on 10 February 2026 to highlight these events and reinforce public appreciation of the bilateral relationship.

The meeting concluded with a reaffirmation of Nigeria and China’s shared commitment to enhancing diplomatic engagement, expanding institutional cooperation, and promoting people-to-people exchanges to benefit both nations.
