Tunisian journalist Chatha Belhaj Mubarak, who had been jailed since 2023 over a high-profile conspiracy case, has been released following a decision by an appeal court to reduce her prison sentence.

The court cut her sentence from five years to two, making her immediately eligible for release, her family confirmed. Mubarak’s brother told reporters that the journalist was freed on Wednesday and has now been reunited with her loved ones.

Her detention had drawn attention from press freedom advocates, who criticized the case as part of broader restrictions on independent media in Tunisia. Her release is being welcomed as a positive step for journalistic freedom in the country, though concerns remain over the legal environment for reporters.

Mubarak is expected to resume her work in journalism while her case continues to serve as a reminder of the challenges faced by media professionals in Tunisia.
