South Africa’s women’s rugby team created history with a thrilling 29-24 victory over Italy at York Community Stadium, booking their place in the Women’s Rugby World Cup quarter-finals for the very first time. The Springbok Women, ranked 12th in the world, stunned seventh-ranked Italy in a high-intensity Pool D clash that kept fans on the edge of their seats until the final whistle.

The match showcased South Africa’s determination and attacking flair, with Aseza Hele crossing the try line early to continue her outstanding tournament form after a hat-trick against Brazil. Nadine Roos soon added another try, capitalizing on a clever break by fly-half Janse van Rensburg. Italy fought back through Vittoria Ostuni Minuzzi and Vittoria Vecchini, but Ayanda Malinga’s powerful finish ensured South Africa kept their lead.

Le Azzurre showed resilience, with Francesca Sgorbini’s second-half try leveling the score. Yet the Springbok Women refused to crumble under pressure, as Sizophila Solontsi powered over the line for their crucial bonus-point try. Italy clawed back once again through Sara Seye to make it 24-24, but South Africa had the final word when Sinazo Mcatshulwa surged over to seal a historic and emotional win.

Head coach Swys de Bruin praised his side’s courage and passion: “This is unreal, it is so emotional. We have never made the quarters, we have never beaten Italy. The nation is so much behind these girls. We just love it. Our girls were absolutely fantastic.”

Player of the match Libbie van Rensburg echoed the sentiment, calling the win a defining moment for women’s rugby in South Africa. “This is massive. We spoke about changing history in South Africa for women’s rugby and we did that. Every single lady who is in the squad is part of making history and I think we really made South Africa proud.”

South Africa will now face France, who demolished Brazil 84-5 next Sunday in a decisive battle for Pool D supremacy. With momentum and national pride behind them, the Springbok Women have already inspired a new generation by proving they belong among the world’s best on rugby’s biggest stage.
