More than 450 civilians, including women and children, have been killed in what the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has described as “horrific attacks” in Sudan’s North Kordofan state. The violence, which took place over the weekend in the areas surrounding Bara, including the villages of Shag Alnom and Hilat Hamid marks one of the deadliest escalations in the country’s ongoing civil conflict.
Among the victims were two pregnant women, 11 girls, and 24 boys, underscoring the devastating impact of the violence on children and families. UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell condemned the attacks in the strongest possible terms, calling them a terrifying escalation of violence and a flagrant violation of international humanitarian law and basic human decency.
Since April 2023, Sudan has been engulfed in a brutal conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), as both groups vie for control of the country. What began as a power struggle has spiraled into a full-scale war, with widespread human rights violations, mass displacement, and deepening humanitarian crises. The Kordofan region, comprising North, South, and West Kordofan states has seen intensified fighting in recent months, placing millions at heightened risk.
UNICEF’s condemnation highlights growing international concern over the worsening situation in Sudan, where civilians, particularly children, are bearing the brunt of a conflict marked by indiscriminate violence, lack of access to basic services, and an urgent need for humanitarian aid. The organization has called for an immediate end to hostilities, unfettered humanitarian access, and accountability for those responsible for atrocities.
As the global community watches with alarm, Sudan’s crisis continues to unfold with devastating consequences, threatening to destabilize the entire Horn of Africa region if urgent action is not taken.
