Israel Airstrikes Kill 19 in Gaza as Troops Set to Remain ‘Indefinitely’ in Captured Areas

Tensions remain high in Gaza as Israeli airstrikes continue across the Strip, with at least 19 Palestinians reportedly killed since dawn today. Medical sources told Al Jazeera that 10 people died in a single strike on Gaza City, adding to the growing toll of casualties in the ongoing war, which is now in its 18th month.

Israel’s Defense Minister, Israel Katz, has confirmed that Israeli troops will continue to occupy certain areas of Gaza indefinitely, declaring them “security zones.” The move signals a shift in Israel’s military strategy, suggesting a long-term presence in parts of the territory. “These areas are vital to our national security and will remain under Israeli control,” Katz said during a press briefing.

Katz also stated that no humanitarian aid will be allowed into Gaza at this time, admitting that Israel is using the restriction of food and supplies as a form of pressure against Hamas. This declaration has sparked outrage from human rights organizations and aid agencies, who argue that the blockade is worsening an already catastrophic humanitarian situation.

According to Gaza’s Health Ministry, at least 51,000 Palestinians have been confirmed dead and over 116,000 wounded since the start of Israel’s military campaign in October 2023. However, the Gaza Government Media Office estimates the death toll to be even higher—more than 61,700—citing thousands still buried under rubble and presumed dead.

The war began after a surprise Hamas-led attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023, in which at least 1,139 Israelis were killed and over 200 people were taken hostage. The attack marked one of the deadliest days in Israel’s history and triggered a wide-scale military response.

The current situation continues to spark alarm across the international community, with increasing calls for a ceasefire and renewed peace negotiations. United Nations officials and several humanitarian agencies have called for immediate access to Gaza to deliver food, medical aid, and shelter to the millions affected.

As Israeli troops entrench their presence in Gaza and the humanitarian crisis deepens, pressure mounts on regional and global actors to intervene diplomatically and bring both sides to the negotiation table. The conflict, which has already reshaped the political landscape of the region, shows no signs of ending soon.

Meanwhile, civilians in Gaza continue to suffer the brunt of the war, with families torn apart, homes destroyed, and essential services collapsing. Calls for international action are growing louder by the day as the world watches one of the most protracted and devastating conflicts in recent history unfold.
