Real Madrid’s women’s team achieved their first-ever victory against Liga F champions Barcelona with an impressive 3-1 win on Sunday 23rd March 2025 at the Olympic Stadium.

In challenging conditions, marked by rain and hail, nearly 36,000 spectators witnessed Madrid’s groundbreaking triumph over their arch-rivals. Despite the loss, Barcelona, under coach Pere Romeu, remains at the top of the standings, four points ahead of second-place Madrid. This defeat marks Barcelona’s second league loss this season.

Barcelona, who have dominated the Spanish top flight for five consecutive years and celebrated a historic quadruple last season, have struggled to replicate their previous dominance. Their remarkable 46-match unbeaten run in Liga F came to an end in February when Levante defeated them at the Johan Cruyff Stadium.

A Game-Changing Victory for Madrid
Real Madrid, whose women’s team was founded in 2020 after acquiring CD Tacon (originally established in 2014), took the lead through Alba Redondo just before halftime. Barcelona fought back, with Caroline Graham Hansen equalizing in the 67th minute.

The match saw its share of controversy when Jana Fernandez’s goal for Barcelona was ruled out for offside, despite appearing legitimate. With no VAR in Liga F, the decision stood, sparking debate among fans and players alike.

Real Madrid’s Scottish forward, Caroline Weir, proved instrumental in the victory. She scored the decisive goal in the 87th minute and added another during stoppage time, securing a historic and unforgettable win for Madrid.

What’s Next?
Real Madrid will next face Arsenal in the UEFA Women’s Champions League quarter-finals on Wednesday, carrying a 2-0 advantage from the first leg. Barcelona, meanwhile, will take on Wolfsburg on Thursday, holding a commanding 4-1 lead from their first encounter.
