The newly elected chairman of the Medical and Dental Consultants’ Association of Nigeria (MDCAN) has pledged to pursue reforms aimed at strengthening the country’s healthcare system and improving the delivery of medical services.
Speaking after assuming office, the chairman said his administration would prioritize initiatives to enhance the welfare of medical consultants, improve working conditions and support policies that promote quality healthcare across Nigeria.
He said the association would work closely with government agencies, healthcare institutions and other stakeholders to address challenges affecting the health sector, including workforce shortages, inadequate infrastructure, limited funding and the migration of healthcare professionals.
According to the chairman, strengthening collaboration among policymakers, healthcare providers and professional bodies will be critical to improving patient care and ensuring that hospitals are better equipped to meet the growing healthcare needs of the population.
He also identified continuous professional development as a key priority, noting that expanding training opportunities and supporting medical research would help consultants keep pace with advances in clinical practice and medical technology. He added that investment in specialist training is essential to improving the quality and availability of healthcare services nationwide.
The chairman further pledged to advocate for policies that improve the welfare of healthcare workers, including better remuneration, safer working environments and access to modern medical equipment. He said addressing these issues would help improve staff motivation, reduce workforce attrition and strengthen service delivery in public health institutions.
Health experts have consistently identified inadequate funding, shortages of skilled personnel and aging infrastructure as major obstacles to effective healthcare delivery in Nigeria. They argue that sustained investment in hospitals, medical education and healthcare technology is necessary to build a more resilient and efficient health system.
Analysts also note that improving healthcare outcomes will require stronger governance, effective policy implementation and increased collaboration between the public and private sectors.
