Ankara, Nigeria’s most iconic fabric, is no longer confined to traditional ceremonies. With its bold prints, vibrant colours, and versatile designs, Ankara has become a global fashion statement, commanding attention on red carpets, fashion runways, and cultural events across continents.
Once regarded as attire for local celebrations, Ankara now rivals Western couture, embraced by international celebrities and fashion enthusiasts from Accra to Atlanta. Its rise reflects both cultural pride and Africa’s growing influence in the global fashion industry.
Tobiloba Adegoke, Chief Executive Officer of OJ Inspired, explained that Ankara’s appeal lies in its ability to merge glamour with cultural storytelling. “Ankara is more than fabric; it’s history, identity, and bold storytelling in colours and patterns. When a young woman in Miami or Toronto wears my dress to prom, she’s carrying a piece of Nigeria with her,” he said.
Demand for Ankara designs has surged, driven by social media platforms such as Instagram and TikTok. “Five years ago, we were exporting in tens. Now, we’re shipping in hundreds every season. Once someone goes viral in Ankara, inquiries flood in. The beauty is, no two pieces are alike each client receives a unique cultural statement,” Adegoke added.
This transformation underscores Ankara’s evolution from local party wear to a global fashion commodity. Each piece embodies Africa’s resilience, creativity, and cultural depth. For designers, the trend represents not only artistic recognition but also expanding business opportunities in international markets.
As Ankara continues to dominate global fashion conversations, it positions Nigeria and Africa as leaders in creativity, craftsmanship, and cultural influence proving that African fashion is both culture and commerce.
