Russian attacks knock out power for thousands in Ukraine’s north

Russian strikes have cut electricity to thousands of residents in northern Ukraine, as attacks on energy infrastructure continue to disrupt civilian life amid the ongoing war.

Ukrainian officials said the strikes targeted critical power facilities, leaving widespread outages across several communities. Emergency crews were deployed to assess the damage and begin repair work, though officials warned that restoring electricity could take time due to the extent of the destruction and ongoing security risks.

The attacks are part of a broader campaign that has repeatedly focused on Ukraine’s energy grid, particularly during periods of heightened fighting. Authorities say such strikes are aimed at weakening infrastructure, straining resources, and affecting civilian morale.

Local officials reported that heating systems and water supply services were also impacted in some areas, increasing the humanitarian pressure on affected communities, especially as temperatures remain low in parts of the country.

Ukraine’s energy operators have been working to build resilience into the grid through repairs, backups, and international support, but repeated strikes have made the system vulnerable to recurring outages.

The latest incident underscores the continued role of infrastructure as a key target in the conflict, with civilians bearing the brunt of disruptions to essential services.
