Norwegian police are searching for a suspect after an explosion occurred outside the United States Embassy in Oslo, authorities said, prompting an investigation into what officials believe may have been a deliberate attack.

The blast happened early Sunday morning near the embassy’s consular entrance in Oslo, damaging part of the building and sending thick smoke into the surrounding street. Police confirmed that the explosion caused minor structural damage but no injuries were reported.

Investigators said early findings indicate the explosion was caused by an improvised explosive device (IED). Security cameras captured images of a person believed to be connected to the incident, and authorities have released the footage while conducting a search for the individual. The suspect reportedly appeared in dark clothing and was carrying a bag near the embassy shortly before the blast.

The Norwegian Police Service has launched a full investigation and is examining several possible motives. Officials said terrorism is one of the hypotheses, although they emphasized that other explanations are still being considered.

Security forces quickly cordoned off the area around the embassy while bomb technicians and investigators examined the scene. Authorities confirmed that no additional explosive devices were found nearby and that the national terror threat level in Norway remains unchanged.

The incident comes at a time of heightened global tensions linked to conflicts in the Middle East, prompting some officials to consider whether the embassy may have been deliberately targeted. However, police stressed that the investigation is still in its early stages and no definitive motive has been established.

Norwegian officials have promised a thorough investigation and are working closely with U.S. authorities as the search for the suspect continues.
