Virginia Governor Spanberger Rips Into Trump on Economy and Immigration

Virginia’s Democratic governor, Abigail Spanberger, delivered a forceful rebuttal to President Donald Trump’s State of the Union address on February 24  2026, sharply criticizing his economic and immigration policies and using the occasion to frame broader political and social concerns ahead of the 2026 U.S. midterm elections. Her remarks highlighted what she characterized as disconnects between the president’s claims and the lived experiences of everyday Americans.

Speaking from the historic House of Burgesses in Williamsburg, Spanberger rejected Trump’s description of economic success under his administration and painted a starkly different picture of hardship for ordinary families. She argued that the president’s aggressive use of tariffs on foreign goods central to his claimed economic “comeback” — has instead driven up costs for consumers, raised prices for key agricultural inputs like fertiliser, and prompted retaliatory trade actions that have hurt American farmers and small businesses. Her critique underscored economic anxieties in rural and farming communities, where market access has been affected and costs remain high.

Spanberger also lambasted what she described as a lack of affordability for ordinary Americans, pointing to persistent high costs in areas such as housing, health care, energy and childcare issues she said she heard repeatedly from Virginians during her campaign last year. She challenged Trump’s narrative that his policies had improved the cost of living, insisting that many families and communities have not felt any real economic relief.

On immigration and law enforcement, Spanberger took issue with the administration’s tactics, accusing poorly trained federal agents of unlawful detentions, family separations and aggressive enforcement actions in U.S. cities without proper judicial oversight. She highlighted specific allegations, including the detention of citizens and children under troubling circumstances, which she cited as evidence of a broken system that requires reform, not harsher enforcement.

Beyond economic and immigration critiques, the governor also accused the administration of prioritising personal enrichment and political theatre over substantive governance. She invoked broader concerns about accountability and the direction of national leadership while urging unity and civic engagement ahead of the midterms.

Spanberger’s response is part of a coordinated Democratic messaging strategy that aims to leverage voter concerns over affordability, fairness and humane governance as the party seeks to regain control of Congress in the November elections.
