NIGERIA COMMISERATES WITH THE DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF THE CONGO OVER THE TRAGIC RUBAYA MINE COLLAPSE

The Federal Government of Nigeria has received with profound sorrow the tragic news of the collapse of the Rubaya Coltan Mine in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, an incident that has reportedly claimed the lives of more than two hundred persons and left many others injured.

On behalf of the Government and people of Nigeria, the Honourable Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, OON, extends heartfelt condolences to the Government and people of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, especially to the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives in this devastating tragedy. Nigeria also conveys deep sympathy to those who sustained injuries and to all affected communities during this period of immense grief, while wishing the wounded a swift and full recovery.

Nigeria notes with deep concern the reported circumstances surrounding the incident, which followed heavy rainfall and significantly affected artisanal miners and nearby residents. The magnitude of this tragedy highlights the serious humanitarian challenges faced by vulnerable populations in resource rich regions and underscores the urgent need for improved safety standards and responsible mining practices.

Nigeria stands in solidarity with the Democratic Republic of the Congo during this difficult time and commends the dedication of local authorities, rescue teams, and emergency responders working tirelessly to recover victims, provide medical care, and ensure the safety of affected communities.
