From the streets of Dublin and other Irish cities, where thousands gathered in sustained pro Palestine demonstrations calling for an end to the war in Gaza, to the electrifying scenes in Dakar as Senegal celebrated its Africa Cup of Nations triumph, the past week was defined by striking images of both protest and celebration across continents.

In West Africa, photographs from Senegal’s capital captured pure jubilation as fans flooded the streets, waving flags, dancing atop vehicles and embracing strangers in a shared moment of national pride after the country’s football victory. The images reflected how sport continues to serve as a powerful unifying force, offering rare moments of collective joy amid wider regional and global challenges.

Elsewhere, images from Latin America showed demonstrations in support of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, with supporters taking to the streets amid political uncertainty and international scrutiny surrounding his leadership. Protesters held placards, chanted slogans and waved national flags, underscoring the deep polarisation and emotional intensity that continue to shape Venezuela’s political landscape.

In Europe, the focus shifted to Switzerland, where United States President Donald Trump appeared in Davos for the World Economic Forum. Photographs from the alpine resort showed Trump at a formal signing ceremony for his newly announced Board of Peace, an event staged against the backdrop of global economic discussions and geopolitical unease. The images highlighted the contrast between the polished diplomacy of Davos and the turmoil unfolding in many parts of the world.

Back in the United States, darker scenes emerged from Minnesota, where tensions escalated following another deadly shooting involving a federal agent. Images from the state showed grieving families, a heavy police presence and protesters demanding accountability and justice. The photographs captured raw emotion and renewed debates around law enforcement, public safety and systemic violence.

Taken together, this week in photos presents a vivid visual narrative of a world in motion, marked by resistance and resilience, celebration and sorrow. From football fuelled euphoria to political demonstrations and moments of high level diplomacy, the images offer a compelling snapshot of the forces shaping global life at this moment.
