Rwanda has joined forces with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and the Government of Poland to strengthen national capacities in responding to industrial and natural hazards. The agreement was signed on November 12 at UNIDO headquarters in Vienna by UNIDO Director General Gerd Müller, Rwanda’s Permanent Representative to UNIDO, Ambassador Urujeni Bakuramutsa, and Poland’s Ambassador Marek Szczygieł.
The initiative, titled “Strengthening Rwanda’s capacities to respond to industrial and natural hazards,” will be implemented by UNIDO in collaboration with the Fire and Rescue Brigade of the Rwanda National Police. The project will involve a comprehensive feasibility study, risk assessment, and the development of a roadmap to enhance firefighting and emergency response systems. A second phase will focus on training personnel and providing specialized equipment.
Ambassador Bakuramutsa emphasized that the initiative reflects Rwanda’s commitment to international cooperation and aligns with the country’s Vision 2050 and National Strategy for Transformation, which aim to build a modern, green, and competitive economy.
UNIDO Director General Gerd Müller described the partnership as “the beginning of a triangular collaboration Poland as an emerging donor, UNIDO with its expertise, and Rwanda on its path toward resilient, sustainable development.” The collaboration builds on existing ties between Rwanda and Poland, particularly in trade and green technology, following a Memorandum of Understanding signed last year during Polish President Andrzej Duda’s visit to Rwanda.
This partnership highlights Rwanda’s proactive approach to industrial safety, disaster preparedness, and sustainable development, positioning the country as a model for regional resilience and innovation.
